Everyone needs Microsoft Sharepoint, right? It is all the rage … but all you really do with it? This is the first critical decision you must do to enjoy a successful SharePoint implementation. Most people have a basic understanding of what is "supposed" to do, say, the collaboration, business intelligence, document management, workflow, etc. But where do you start? How can quickly deploy a solution and realize the value that Sharepoint can bring to your organization?

What we normally see is this: an organization which has heard the buzz, want to join the party, and purchased MOSS with high hopes that the immediate solution of their content management struggles. Then reality hits. Several sites of Sharepoint are pulled to different business units, document libraries are created where users can store their digital assets, duplication, sharing of data being compromised; create workflows that optimized certain processes, but not to satisfy most scenarios. With SharePoint reality begins to hinder productivity and users are beginning to wonder why they implemented the principle.

Successful implementation starts with the right mentality of what actually is Sharepoint. There is a solution in itself. I like to think of SharePoint as a platform on which you can build and integrate solutions to most of their business problems that are not already included in their line of business applications (ERP, MRP, finance, etc..) Sharepoint has its obvious advantages, but also has some not so obvious weaknesses. For example, can dramatically improve the productivity of knowledge workers, providing a dashboard to manage and run most of the tasks or projects that work throughout the day. It provides an enterprise search tool that allows workers to easily find the information they need to do their job, no matter where that information is stored.

Can also be used to centralize all unstructured data bases that an organization is typically: worksheets, access files, and lists of words in the document. However, there are areas where it does not measure up that can cause Sharepoint deployment to suffer. Document / records management is one of these areas. Yes, SharePoint is a good storage location for Microsoft Office documents that creates, but what about all the paper records that need to be stored and archived electronically? How do you think put them into SharePoint? When you have scanned Most unstructured documents in Sharepoint overall performance may decline due to the terabyte of stored files and binary objects in their own database. So what is their resource?

Sharepoint has ignored these major obstacles and still is advertised as a document management system. Do not get me wrong, the more I know about Sharepoint, the more I love it. It has opened new doors to the efficiency of the organization, providing a common space for people to use the content once you have created.

The main point I have today is that when it comes to document management, you do not have to make the choice between Sharepoint and a system of traditional ECM Laserfiche. The best solutions both are integrated intensities of use of each system, along with their technologies to share, to create a fully integrated, end to end solution. And the add benefit is that these integrated solutions dramatically reduce implementation time because they no longer have to customize SharePoint to overcome their coded deficiencies.
